Where to Find Wild Haggis in Scotland
July 13, 2026Meet Sterling, the White Tash Haggis
Say hello to Sterling, the White Tash Haggis, one of the distinctive Haggis animals from the Haggis Wildlife Foundation.
Sterling is easy to recognise thanks to the bright white markings around his mouth. Against his darker coat, they give him the appearance of having his very own little white moustache, or as we like to call it, his white tash.
In our latest video, you can get a closer look at Sterling and see what makes the White Tash Haggis so recognisable.
The White Tash Haggis
The White Tash Haggis is identified by the characteristic pale markings around the mouth and muzzle.
While other Haggis animals have their own colours, markings and distinctive features, the White Tash has one of the easiest features to spot. Look towards the face and you’ll find that unmistakable splash of white.
Sterling is a lovely example. His darker fur creates a strong contrast with the white around his mouth, making his tash particularly noticeable.
It gives the White Tash Haggis quite a distinguished appearance too.
Why Do We Call It a “Tash”?
The name is deliberately simple.
“Tash” is an informal British word for a moustache.
It’s one of those everyday words you might hear around Scotland and elsewhere in Britain, and Sterling gives us a rather good visual explanation of it.
His white markings sit exactly where you would expect a moustache to be, so White Tash Haggis seemed a very appropriate name.
This is also part of what we enjoy about introducing our different Haggis animals. Their names and characteristics give us small opportunities to introduce words, places and other pieces of Scottish and British culture along the way.
What Makes Sterling Different?
When you first discover the world of Haggis animals, it can be tempting to think they all look much the same.
Look a little closer and you’ll begin noticing the differences.
Colour, facial markings and other characteristics help distinguish one type from another, and individual Haggis can have their own recognisable appearance too.
For Sterling, there isn’t much detective work required.
Just look for the white tash.
It’s the feature that immediately identifies him and makes him such a good example of the White Tash Haggis.
A Little Bit of Scotland
Our Haggis animals are also a fun way of discovering more about Scotland.
The Haggis is one of the most famous things associated with Scotland, although the Haggis Wildlife Foundation gives the familiar name a rather different life.
Through our different Haggis animals, we can introduce Scottish words, places, traditions and culture in a way that’s easy for children and adults to explore.
Sterling starts with something very small: one word.
Tash.
Now, whenever you hear someone in Scotland talking about a magnificent tash, you’ll know exactly what they mean.
And you’ll probably think of Sterling.
See Sterling for Yourself
Photographs are great for getting a close look at Sterling’s markings, but video lets you see the White Tash Haggis in a completely different way.
You can see his appearance from different angles and, most importantly, get a proper look at that famous white tash.
Watch Sterling, the White Tash Haggis
Sterling is just one of the different Haggis animals that make up the world of the Haggis Wildlife Foundation.
Each one is a little different, and each gives us another opportunity to discover something new.
For Sterling, there’s only one thing you really need to remember:
Dark fur. White moustache. White Tash Haggis.
Welcome, Sterling.
